about

Four Fathers is collection of acoustic single-takes. Recorded over two nights and an afternoon in Wilmington, DE in an empty storefront, it served as Levi's demo tape for venues and introduces listeners to the "post-cynical folk rock" he's continued to develop. From the internal-rhyme-laden oracles against discontent found in "Cars of Our Youth" to the affirming, wry homage "Delaware"—Levi's lifelong home—the songs deal with loss, desire, and mercy. Unadorned and quite imperfect, this collection documents a season when Levi was introducing himself to listeners at house shows and finding himself as a public artist.

As his last release under the moniker Levi Dylan & the Former Ruins, it serves as a bearing point for subsequent releases under the name Former Ruins.

Track Name: Long Time Being Born
For a healing hand to mend all our wounds
For her return when love has left the room
For new mercies to break on Atlantic shores
For one mighty hand to break down ten thousand doors

I've been remembering
A place to belong, a face held/cradled in my arms
A lost embrace, a lost page that's been/that we've torn [and we've thrown it away]

This is the cause of my joy and mourning
That our labor is not in vain
Life begins and ends in pain
I don't know the face, but I know the name
Faith
Is a long time being born

For reconciled ones to carry the peace
For reviled ones to forgive enemies
For the child's cry to end forefathers' wars
For one righteous man to put away all our swords

But still I'll sing to a bleeding sun
Daily laid down in darkness
Still I hold my beloved ones
Daily closer to departing
But still I'll sing to that bleeding sun
Daily rising over darkness
So I've told my beloved ones
Each day is one closer to the start of a world without end
Track Name: Way Out
All the ways I've loved you
Too many to count
Seen or hidden or willed or unbidden
They will find their way out

All the ways I've known you
I want to know them now
The joy, the sorrow, the mercy for tomorrow
They will find their way out

They'll find their way out
They'll find a way out

All the ways I've wronged you
You do not keep count.
As harsh as lightning or hardly unsurprising,
They're gonna find their way out
Their way out to you

All the ways that I long for you,
You unearth those founts
Only you know how deep you gotta go,
Til they find their way out

These are days of lavish grace, it is placed upon our heads
Like a crown of chamomile flowers, and a taste on our tongue for daily bread

All these ways I've loved you girl
Too many to count right now

All these ways I choose you
Keep us safe within this house
It is single floor, no backdoor
I see no way out
No I seek no way out
No I'll find no way out
No way out out of this love
There's no way out
No way out of this love
Track Name: Cars of Our Youth
Sunlight spread out on the glass
I push this pedal down to get the feeling back
I knew these routes without any maps
I had no doubts of getting lost
But I have

Rent a dream with me, I've already priced it
I've signed my name, put yours beside it
Paradise is a feeling, I saw that advertisement
It didn't feel as false as it does at this moment
When we're

Closer to the edge of our discontent
Further from a truth I'm trying hard to forget
Nothing satisfies us like it used to
Nothing reminds us desires rust like cars of our youth
Nothing satisfies us like it promises to do
Nothing will drive us down to dust like cars of our youth

I remember the feeling when we were shown it
Have I missed some renewal notice?
We were promised happiness, it would be us in motion
But I'm still at this wheel and I don't feel closer to it
I'm feeling

Closer to the edge of our discontent
Further from a truth I'm trying hard to forget
Nothing satisfies us like it used to
Nothing reminds us desires rust like cars of our youth
Nothing satisfies us like it promises to do
Nothing will drive us down to dust like cars of our youth
Track Name: Delaware
Diamond state, a high and lofty name
For a sandbar raised between two bays
Could it be that we feel we are not first rate?
It’s all in a name how you compensate

I have to confess to ya , I’ve toured historic homes of Odessa
I wasn’t too impressed, You don’t think any less of me do ya?
For all the ways we can honor the past, it’s plain
At present we’ve lost a sense of place
Presently lost in space

I have known you for all my life
And I’m just starting to love you
Starting to learn you

Newark of a covenant
College town drowning out to forget
The name given it
A woman clothed in gold sun and pure blue dress
She’s more blessed than any old Annabel from Edgar Allen’s pen
Our love is a mix of eternal things and transience

Now The Brandywine, runs in the back of my mind
All the way from Talleyville, flowing past Monkey Hill
It is a valley filled With liquid rail bringing life all the way
All the way past 16th and Pine
I think it’s pretty fine

Where is a place on Earth that I can can call my home?
Where is a place on Earth that I can call my own?
Where did we get this sense of some other Land
Where some other sun has shone?
But for now I’m gonna make my bed and my pledge to
Delaware, Delaware my home
Delaware is that place on Earth that I can call my home
Delaware is a place on Earth

South of the Canal in a split-level house
At the end of town we watched the sun burn down
The field across Caldwell Corner Rd.
Like the eye of God was taking notice of every curtain close
Upon this place on Earth we call our home
